Full many a gem of purest ray serene
The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air. (from “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” by Thomas Gray)

There are certainly many excellent established blogs out there. I love to read them. But I also like to scour the blogopsphere for hidden gems.

The great blogs are great by consensus and I respect the opinion of the large number of readers vetoing them. But I never know what may have slipped through the lenses of these discerning readers  in the complex system by which blogs acquire good karma.

I trust my own opinion the best where understanding which blogs would suit me the most is concerned.

Excellent quality: There are some blogs out there that are just that. Excellent. For some reason, they don’t get much attention, sometimes because the writers don’t put as much effort into networking in the blogosphere. Often it’s just a case that their content doesn’t have mass appeal. But if I’m one of those readers who is interested in that kind of content, it’s a great read for me. As a reader, I often have to dredge through hundreds of blogs to find these. It’s always a pleasant corroboration of my good readerly instincts to find that a blog I have been following for a while suddenly gets a lot of recognition.

Hard work: The not-so-well-known-yet blogs show a lot of hard work and persistence. It’s relatively easy to keep going when one is receiving encouragement from many readers but it shows real dedication when one continues writing even when there aren’t so many people reading. I find that kind of dedication inspiring.

Fluidity, lack of complacency, openness of voice: This is a major refreshing difference between new, upcoming and relatively obscure blogs and the established ones. The not-so-well-known blogs take risks with their voice, points of view, subject matter and layout in a way that already established players don’t. Perhaps the established players feel like they have too much to lose should an idea not work out. The blogs with fewer readers seem less predictable and more “honest” somehow. There is always a surprise element involved. I never know what I could discover. That’s why I like browsing these smaller blogs.

The sheer number of such blogs provides me with a sense of a multiplicity of voices when I browse them together that I never get reading a selection of established blogs. It feels like there are a lot of people interacting in an everyday sort of way. I like that feeling.

So nice to have met you 🙂 I’m a bad blogger. I actually wrote a piece on being a bad blogger last year, but this year I hope to do better. Thanks for coming by!

I love this. I wish more people used this thought process. In any case, this is a compliment to blogging in general. The idea of searching through many blogs just to find a few gems–that’s what it’s all about.

Thanks for visiting Bookshelf: for the intellectually curious and posting a like. Really appreciate the article on obscure or little-known blogs. Reading blogs is like browsing through a large, old bookstore — you never know when you come across a rare treasure that is meaningful to you. We read to know that we are not alone; similarly we write to know that we are not alone; that there is something valid about our existence and our perceptions of the world and there is a fundamental need to share that with others in a meaningful way. Much of the best that is out there is written because the writer is innately and insatiably curious. One of my favorite quotes is from Einstein who wrote: “The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when contemplating the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of the mystery every day. The important thing is not to stop questioning; never lose a holy curiosity.” Look forward to reading further posts on your literary journey.

I liked the selection of poetry with which you began this post, and I liked some of the comments. Making a list of the blogs you’ve discovered is a great idea, because I don’t even know how to find blogs! I have been continually amazed when people find me, and I visit each and every one in return. I have an original blog that I feel almost a familial attachment too, and I related to your statement about continuing to write for it even though very few visited. It is on a different platform, and I think that is part of the problem, because I worked hard on my posts (200+ of them). Because I wanted a new focus, more along the lines of marketing and writing, I started a new one, and it gave me a new impetus to write. I am enjoying blogging all over again! Thanks for visiting!

After a year of blogging, I only had about 50 subscribers. I was thrilled with that because I didn’t think anyone would stop by. Luckily, readership has increased, but I’m still not a big blog by any means. The comments are what make blogging interesting to me. The ‘friendships’ formed from regular readers are also rewarding as well. Thanks for dropping by my blog from time to time!

I do something similar, but with books. I like to try out some indie authors, and while many of them are just mediocre, some of them turn out to be quite good. Amazing that they’re not popular. But like you said, a lot of it is lack of marketing.

Would love to see a list of lesser-known blogs that you enjoy. I like discovering, as well.

Thanks for stopping by my little blogspace this evening. Like several who have posted here, I’m new to this thing called blog, but I am so pleasantly distracted by it. It is serving so many purposes for me—recording silly stories, archiving family history, exploring feelings and thoughts, finding my voice, etc. Focused on engaging each day with action words. But I am interested in who is reading these words and look forward to the feedback. I have found this community to be very encouraging and I look forward to growing and challenging myself as a writer…whatever the outcome may be.

I remember that when I started blogging just under a year ago how thrilled I was when someone other than a family member read and actually commented on my post. And then I got some “likes”!! I’m certainly not a big blog now and because I write about a variety of things and also do lots of photos, my blog doesn’t fall into a category. But what a joy to build relationships with readers! I wish I had more time to read other blogs and am trying to work in a few more out of the many interesting ones out there. Maybe a goal for 2013.

I’ve noticed that the bigger blogs that are my favorites still kind of seem small somehow. Do you have any tips for searching for smaller blogs? I usually do it by topic, but sometimes my favorite blogs are on topics that I’m not particularly interested in.

I often search under “Explore Topics.” I have some favourite topics but I sometimes deliberately search topics I’ve never searched before so that I can find unfamiliar blogs. Sometimes I just randomly google and start on a low ranking page, say page 10 instead of 1!

I love surfing tags and peeking at blogs I’ve never before encountered.

Your third reason inspired a smile here. I feel like I’m on the opposite trajectory. For a while I felt constrained because I began my blog as a “writer’s blog,” and a writer (according to all my instructors when I began) must never be anything other than purely positive when blogging. I pigeonholed myself based on my interpretation of that instruction. It’s not to say I didn’t also write some deeply personal, fierce posts, but that they had to be on Really Important subjects.

It’s been a couple of years since I started blogging, and I can’t sustain that constant filtering anymore. I want to write about what I want to write about. Sometimes (OK, a lot of the time) it’ll be serious, others silly. Sometimes my posts will be writing-related, others about my life and perspectives. And now more than ever, they’ll be honestly and 100% what I want to write, whether four people or (much more rarely) forty people like them. Even if folks get a little miffed. It’s not my intention to make folks miffed, certainly, but there are so many other areas in my life where I must be ever-so-careful about how and when I express myself, I want to have the freedom and space to have my blog be my true voice, even if my voice today is not my voice tomorrow, and even if it means I’ll only ever see a slow trickle of new readers.

The peace that’s coming with finally throwing up my hands on this point is great. 🙂

I also began a writing blog, and wrote in it only a few times for about a year. Now that I’m blogging more, I find I’m writing the posts mostly for myself. It feels good to say things that I simply don’t get a chance to say any other way. I’m smiling now because I understand the need to ‘have the freedom and space to have my blog be my true voice.’

Nice to find someone who understands that!
